Merlin Park Orthopaedic Theatres | BIM & As Built Drawing

Client: HSE West / Saolta University Health Care Group

This project entailed the construction of two brand-new orthopaedic theatres, located on the ground floor of the hospital extension, with an overhead first-floor plant area providing utilities to the suites. The building was fully delivered using a BIM workflow.

As a BIM-enabled project, the construction team received 3D models from design stage onwards. ENGDOC provided the following services:

  • BIM documentation for the main contractor
  • Point cloud laser scanning at multiple stages (post-1st-fix for above ceiling services; post-2nd-fix for final service locations)
  • Detailed as-built drawing and modelling, capturing critical concealed components such as volume control dampers, fire dampers and valves in the service voids.

Given the critical nature of hospital theatres, it was imperative that the final handover model and drawings matched exactly what was installed onsite. ENGDOC’s laser-scans were incorporated into the Revit model and revisions made to ensure alignment with actual installation conditions

  • Fully BIM-coordinated theatre block in a live hospital environment (no major disruption)
  • Millimetre accurate as-built model and drawings for future maintenance and asset management
  • Demonstrated efficiency and confidence-building through clear coordination between trades and consulting parties
